SALINS LES BAINS, CITY OF SPARKLING WATERS

View of Salins

Your first sight of Salins is that of a town stretching out along a narrow valley, scaling the flanks of the two mounts on which sit the fortresses of Saint-André and Belin:
Salins-les-Bains, thermal town and tourist attraction.

Tower of Flore

Like a hidden treasure, the waters are secret, and yet always present! The sovereignty of the town sprang up from the ground, ant its fabulously rich in salt water. It inscribed itself in the nobility of the architecture of this City of "White Gold". More than twenty buildings are registered as historical monuments, and the streets are lined with the facades of private mansions dating back to the XVIII° and XIX° century, ramparts, towers, and convents…

Why don't you stroll along the alley-way and up the stairs, to the terraces of private gardens, or enter the courtyards and the quiet freshness of the ancient churches of Saint Anatoile and Notre-Dame.

A town with a town, in itself a fortress, the historical Salt Works was the theatre of a thousand years of intense activity.
In the Middle-Ages no less than eight hundred people worked there!

Deep in the arched underground galleries of the XIII° century you will discover the structure of the astounding salt-water pumping apparatus; the salt water would evaporate in, the stifling heat of the boilers, releasing the cristalized salt for the salt-workers to rake. The Salt Works carried on functionning until 1962.

Water, water everywhere. Its energy was also harnessed from the river and helped industrialize the Saint-Pierre outskirts of the town in the XIX° century.

The encounter between water and the potter's fine clay was also to bear its fruit. And ever since that time the earthenware factories of Salins have celebrated the art of ceramic making.

The water here is rich and tonic like sea water! Salins-les-Bains draws its vitality from thermalism: a bath of health, bubbling and naturally beneficial.

Hiking, horse-riding, mountain bicycling, and why not hand-gliding: offer yourself a green escapade in the Jura, while enjoying the waters of health and well-being at Salins-les-Bains.
